Winter Break 2011

Some birds I draw before/during break

Some people in LA

Some ladies in Vancouver and LA

Happy 2012 everybody! My winter break was amazing. I had the great opportunity to visit my mom's family in California (I *am* that hispanic stereotype with the enormous extended family). We did some really cool tourism, and some really cool hanging out with those cousins-I-didn't-know-existed. It was so much fun to be around my family and eat Salvadoran food almost every day! I missed pupusas so much; I didn't have any last semester and they are just the yummiest dish on Earth. God bless all delicious-pupusa-makers of the world.
2011 was a year in which I learned a lot about myself. I believe I was too selfish and self-centered the entire year (I did volunteering and protested against something terrible once over the summer and it was great, but I don't think that's enough), so one of my resolutions is to try and be more selfless, more helpful, and to take action in standing up for causes I support.
Anyway, I'm really excited about 2012. This year is looking pre-tty good, and I'm very happy and thankful to be doing what I love. It's absolutely crazy that I'll start working on my GRAD PROJECT in a couple of months... Time does fly.
May this year be blessed with awesomeness of all kinds for you guys as well <3

¡Feliz año nuevo a todxs!

Coffee (Motion Graphics)

This is my final project for my motion graphics class. I think this was the class I enjoyed the most this semester. I feel like I learned a lot, although I don't think I applied this knowledge to my work very well. I also got to play around with Particular and Mocha, and those experiences were pretty excellent. I'll be taking Special Effects next semester, and working with special effects in Houdini and Particular in After Effects is something I'm very interested in. I feel so much more comfortable with After Effects now!

For this assignment, I wanted to create an infographic about the production of coffee. I'm satisfied with the overall feel, but I still think there are some timing issues that could be fixed.

The Canada Line Project

The Canada Line Project consists of four 10 second films my classmates in Experimental Animation and I worked on for a couple of months this semester. This was commissioned by the Canada Line subway company, and will be aired from the middle of January to February in all the screens of all the Canada Line stations. So, if you're in the Vancouver area during that time, make sure you take the subway and check out all four films! The films will be aired individually during four weeks. This has been my first experience with public art - exciting!

The sad thing? We weren't allowed to add sound - I really wish we had worked with sound!

The class was divided into three different groups to work on the first three films. We had to develop ideas and pitch them to our benefactors - a public art consultor and a representative from the Canada Line company. I was very lucky to work with a group of talented people on the third film "Parade". Eventually, we organized a set of people to work on the final film "Coda". After seeing what the other two groups created, I must say this project was very successful. You'd have to see them all together, but I'll save that for later. These are the films I worked on:

Here are some WIP clips, and tests of the characters I animated. It was exciting to animate paper cutouts; this is something I might do for my grad project. Also, I'm very happy I got to work in so many aspects of production - from storyboards and animatics  to compositing and cleanup.

Ghosts

"Ghosts" is a little comic I've been working on for the past few days for the ILL'N Club Illustration Anthology. The theme is "Daydreams and Nightmares". This took around 20 hours, which -now that I think about it- seems like a lot. I think I might be a slow worker (original size is 11" x 14"). I used construction paper, card stock, cardboard, felt, and a lot of hot glue. This version has been slightly cleaned up in Photoshop (nothing significant).
I'm happy with the results, although now that I look at it all finished, I can definitely spot many mistakes I could've dealt with a lot better. Anyway, there's always next time. Eventually, I'll post the process behind this.

Second Annual Deck Show

Last night, the ILL'N Club's 2nd annual Deck Show opened at The Fall Gallery & Tattoo. It was a great night, and I was very impressed by the quantity (125 boards, ladies and gentlemen!) and quality of the work. I took a lot of pictures and posted the prettiest because I'm a horrible photographer.

Perhaps the only thing that bothered me was that our piece (mine was a collab with my roommate Laura Nisbet) was hung upside down. It was a bit too late to fix this when we got there, but oh well. Hopefully, it'll be fixed in the next couple of days.

Because most of these pictures were taken when the boards hadn't been labeled yet ( I got there pretty early), I don't know most of the artists/titles. If you see your work here, drop me a line in a comment so I can add your name, and title of your piece.

Work by Jenna Brown (far left, blue background)

"Hooters Gonna Hoot" by Rachel Shneyer (bottom)

Work by Leira Zamfirescu (far left), Alice Vogelaar (bleeding bird on white background), and Devin Rosychuk (green and pink skull design)

Two boards (the pirate and the creatures in the city) by Durwin Talon and Guin Thompson

The piece with the snake was made by Nomi Chi, who also works as a tattoo artist at The Fall.

WHY IS EVERYTHING SO NICE

"A Deck of Birds", by Laura Nisbet and myself (colorful one next to the doughnuts). From a completely different angle.
Let's just call it abstract art.

We got a really good amount of people :D
Must've been the great art + the bar!

Not sure who made this, but I found it lovely.

My board from the last show, I regret not
retouching the colours :/ They could've used
a revamp!

Close-up for vanity

"Gentlemen" by Sinan Demirer (middle, with the pigs)

"Marie Antoinette" by Rebecca Rochon (middle, pink background)

I want to buy this doughnuty board and eat it!

If you're interested in purchasing any of these pieces, they're on sale until the end of January at The Fall, in Downtown Van.

A Deck of Birds

A Deck of Birds - by Laura Nisbet and myself. This is a collaborative piece for the ILL'N Club's second annual Deck Show, opening this saturday at The Fall Gallery & Tattoo. I'm super excited about this, it's so humbling to see my work hanging next to some really brilliant pieces. Come if you're in the area - it's going to be pretty amazing!

Bent Fairy Tale Reel

This is a project for my Storytelling + Script Development class. The assignment was to pick a fairy tale and modify it. The story I chose is a Romanian tale about a knight who saves a princess from a dragon who likes to collect princesses and show them off (as you do, you know). I bent it by giving the princesses a CELL PHONE! I might make some changes to it, but so far I think it's looking really cute.

--
