The Art of Yuki Onna

The Art of Yuki Onna is a collaborative visual development project in which a group of fantastic artists (who happen to be my friends) and I reinterpreted the Japanese tale of Yuki Onna.

My friend Seth did a fantastic job with the art direction (as well as producing several paintings for the book), and he helped shape the project into a collaboration that still felt independent and personal to all participating artists. We each interpreted the story into different times, styles, and stories. My approach was very simple, as I didn't really change many of the elements.

Working in a collaborative vis dev project was a fantastic experience. I learned a lot from my fellow collaborators, and it was a great way to keep my creative brains busy. The biggest challenge for me was balancing my full time job in animation with this project. As always, I wish I had done even more work, but I'm happy I had something to work on during the weekends and even late nights after work.

You can read more about the book and the artists in it at my friend Mariya's blog. You *do not* want to miss her beautiful watercolour paintings. Mariya is so, so good.

Other artists who worked on this book:
Travaldo Sinan Laura
Special thanks to Amy for the design and layout of the book!

The summer of 2013 was beautiful and so are you

As this summer comes to an end, I decided I wanted to share some of the wonderful things that happened to me during this season. I AM SO SORRY I WROTE SO MUCH. Maybe I'll edit it down? Maybe I'll re do the text and clean it up? Maybe I should've just written a text post? Maybe. I thought this was going to take two or three days to finish, it ended up taking almost two weeks.

Oh well~

Hey, if you find any awkward spelling/grammar mistakes, please let me know. I am also currently working on a Spanish version.

TL; DR: I WENT TO SDCC AND SIGGRAPH AND DISNEYLAND AND NEW YORK AND I'M STILL UNEMPLOYED AND IN DEBT BUT I HAVE THE COOLEST FRIENDS EVER SO WHATEVS K THX

Some apologies:
I am sorry if your face/body is in this comic and you think you deserve to look more beautiful. My artistic abilities are limited, but your sex appeal isn't.

Also, it makes me sad I didn't include EVERYONE I hung out with, but that would've taken like six years to finish. Maybe I'll write a longer/more awesome version of this and it'll take six years. Maybe.

Emerald City of Oz

This is part of a group assignment for a concept illustration class I took this semester. The class was pleasant and fun enough, but I wish I'd taken it before, and not during my last semester at school. I didn't dedicate enough time to it! The assignment was to redesign the story of the Wizard of Oz, and my team decided to go for a theme inspired in Islamic art.

We didn't get it right at all, but it was a fun project to work on.

So, these are roughs and a somewhat final rendering of the Emerald City of Oz, inspired by Abassid architecture and Moorish art (which I don't think I got well enough, but dang I tried).

So this was my day: YVR, 4:15 AM

My friend Amanda organized a tumblog so a bunch of my friends and I could upload little comics we draw about everyday life. This summer has been a bit busy for me, between taking summer classes, working on my grad film, visiting my family back in El Salvador, and volunteering at SIGGRAPH, but I'm happy I've had time to finish this little comic. I'll be working on more over the next few days!

Don't forget to visit (and follow!) So, this was my day.

Self Portrait

I made this for a small book some of my friends and I collaborated on. The book was art directed by my friend Seth.
This is the final version of THIS.
THIS is what I drew for the book - THE BIKE CAGE!

The Bike Cage

This is part of a collab project Seth organized. We've been working on a short book to introduce new students at our school (foundlings) to key locations around school.
This is the bike cage!

Armed and Ready

Mascot/Logo design for Armed and Ready Productions, makers of Quintipus, a project by my friend Victoria Angell in which I'm helping out a bit. Check it out, it's looking really great!

Also, check out the Lion Fish Republic blog. It's still quite empty, but I'll keep you updated. LFR is a loose collective of artists in Vancouver, BC. Our current lineup consists of Mike MacRae, Pakorn Patarawutiporn, Rachel Shneyer, Seth Rutledge, Sinan Demirer, Sunny Shah, and yours truly. A fantastic combo, if you ask me!

Dude!

A guy I saw at ECCC. He was super excited!

Grad Film Ideas

So... none of them is fleshed out or well thought of yet. Brainstorming. Yep.

Idea #1: A girl
In a world with no females or sexual reproduction  (babies are born from plants), a solitary man finds a baby that's just not like the rest. By learning about differences through his relationship with his new daughter, he learns how to deal with those that are more like him.

Idea #2: A ghost
After being kicked out of the haunted mansion that had been his home for a very long time, a lonely ghost decides to pack his bags and move to the city. Follow his adventures as he travels through Craigslist to find the perfect place to chill and as he develops relationships with the living!

Idea #3: A convention
Nicolle, the local cosplay star and leader of the A-list girl clique at Central City Comic Con, hates fake nerds. After Anna, a casual sci-fi fan, wins the coolest and most precious action figure in a raffle, Nicolle and her friends will do anything to show her who's boss and kick her butt out of the convention for good.

Ghosts

"Ghosts" is a little comic I've been working on for the past few days for the ILL'N Club Illustration Anthology. The theme is "Daydreams and Nightmares". This took around 20 hours, which -now that I think about it- seems like a lot. I think I might be a slow worker (original size is 11" x 14"). I used construction paper, card stock, cardboard, felt, and a lot of hot glue. This version has been slightly cleaned up in Photoshop (nothing significant).
I'm happy with the results, although now that I look at it all finished, I can definitely spot many mistakes I could've dealt with a lot better. Anyway, there's always next time. Eventually, I'll post the process behind this.

A Deck of Birds

A Deck of Birds - by Laura Nisbet and myself. This is a collaborative piece for the ILL'N Club's second annual Deck Show, opening this saturday at The Fall Gallery & Tattoo. I'm super excited about this, it's so humbling to see my work hanging next to some really brilliant pieces. Come if you're in the area - it's going to be pretty amazing!

Canada Line Project Development II

More development for the Canada Line Project! I don't think we'll be using these characters, but they were fun to work on.
--
Más desarrollo para el proyecto de la Canada Line (es una compañía de trenes subterráneos). Mi equipo y yo decidimos no usar estos personajes, pero igual fue divertido hacerlos.
